Former My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero brought his new musical project to the Hard Luck in Toronto for their first headline tour, off the back of their new record ‘.STOMACHACHES.’ The crowd skewed predominantly towards young women, most of whom no doubt followed MCR closely in that bands day. Indeed only a few songs into the set you could hear the less enthusiastic show goers starting to yell for MCR songs. There is definitely something recognizable in his songs, it’s a project that stands on its own. Taking center stage as opposed to his former supporting role he made an excellent an engaging frontman, teeming with energy. In the face of some severe mid set technical difficulties they still managed to impress. One highlight being his cover of Jawbreaker’s “Boxcar” with opener Derek Zanetti.
Opener Derek Zanetti, performing as the Homeless Gospel Choir, was especially a highlight. With an extremely charming nature, and a knack for introducing all of his songs as protest songs, he quickly won over the crowd. On stage solo with an acoustic guitar, he rattled through an incredibly solid set of songs, some new, and some old. He closed his set by leaping into the crowd and performing from the floor, no doubt making several new fans along the way.
