California low-fi pop rock stoners Wavves have intrigued us to say the least. We had a chance to catch a few tracks last month at North By North East Festival in Toronto and will be listening a tad more intently next month when Sidewalk Hustle covers their show in San Francisco.
The title of their third album King of the Beach pays homage to the ever present indie beach love affair and marks the triumphant come-back for front runner Nathan Williams after an epic breakdown last year at the Barcelona Primavery Sound Festival due to heavy alcohol and drug-use. After two of three members quit the band, the late Jay Reatard’s drummer and bassist joined in late 2009 wherein the band began writing a new record.
Due out next month via Fat Possum the record is produced by the stellar Dennis Herring (The Hives, Modest Mouse) and showcases Williams growth in songwriting while still maintaining the mid-90s punk archetype the band was founded on.
