We were briefly in Los Angeles a couple of weeks back, looking for something to do with our limited time in the city of angels, when we saw there was a Vérité show at The Echo. Not only had we never been to The Echo (we know, we know), but we really like Vérité so it seemed like a good plan. She was very good, of course, but that’s not who caught our attention. Her opener was a lanky, longhaired singer who calls himself Lostboycrow.
There isn’t much information about him on the internet. From what we can tell, he’s part hippie, part R&B crooner. We were very confused, in a good way. He’s a pop vocalist at heart, confidently covering the stage and engaging a crowd that wasn’t really here to see him. Support acts have a tough job. They want to get their music out there and gain their own fans but they’re often playing to a half empty room of people who want nothing to do with them. Two songs in, Lostboycrow had us hooked and we were disappointed when he was done.
During his set, he talked about his love for Los Angeles (he lives in East L.A.), but he’s actually a former jock from the Pacific Northwest. Before moving from his native Portland, he’s always felt like he was meant to be in L.A. He’s found a local community of supportive artists and producers that inspire him to keep working. He’s currently releasing music independently. We don’t now if he’s being courted by major labels, but we hope he can successfully hold them off a bit longer. Many of his songs (“Hiy Hiy,” C’est la vie,” “Say You Want Me”) are produced by flor’s Dylan William. By now, you already know we’re suckers for R&B infused eletropop so we’re keeping a very close eye on Lostboycrow and you should too.
