You know a tune is tight when it makes you want to learn a different language. Such is the case with tricot (pronounced “tree-ko”). tricot are an effortlessly cool math rock trio from Kyoto, Japan with just the right amount of irresistible pop sensibilities. tricot is the sonic combination of Ikkyu Nakajima, Motoko “Motifour” Kida, and Hiromi “Hirohiro” Sagane. Just a casual trio of ladies who have the ability melt your face off. When NME asked to tricot to describe their style Motifour said…
I don’t know … I think it’s rock. We don’t set out to make complex songs, but people say our music is complicated. In our songs there are many elements and gimmicks from various genres, which might be confusing. We just enjoy making songs.
And the joy shines through in the tracks. tricot released their debut album T H E in 2013 on their own label Bakuretsu Records and ever since we came across the music video for their early single “Ochansensu-su” (check it out below) we’ve been hooked.
We recommend spending some time going into a YouTube tricot binge, as they have stacks on stacks of rad videos. There’s “POOL” which features a bunch of people filming the band on their phones, or the ever catchy/sporty “OYASUMI” just to name a few. This past March, tricot released their second album titled A N D. On it was the single “E” (below) which Ikkyu gave some insight to NME…
The temporary title of ‘E’ was “virus” so I wrote the lyrics about Twitter hijacking, which was going on in Japan.
Already known in Japan and the UK, tricot just finished up their first North American tour, and tore it up taking festivals by storm. They’re taking over the world and fast. Hell, they’ve already supported the Pixies. World domination is simply a matter of time. Just check out tricot’s latest video for their song “Pork Ginger” below.
