Toronto brother sister synth pop duo Brave Shores have dropped a video of their track “Surfs Up” off their debut EP. Directed by Emma Higgins and Henry Sansom, the video features Jay and Stefanie taking it easy on a beach when they cross paths with some magical animated new friends. When asked on what sparked the idea, Stefanie responded…
I would say the song is light and fun on the surface, but has a darker undercurrent if you listen to the lyrics and some of the music choices. We tried to capture that vibe by borrowing from the older creepy Mickey Mouse cartoons (that often involved torture and monsters and got pretty scary for kids), the original Snow White, and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
Jay adds…
Personally, I believe it to be a sad song, about escapism and laziness. My favourite part is dancing alongside the mouse. I was inspired by the 2 dudes dancing in the Tears for Fears “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” video.
Check out the video above. Brave Shores are in the studio working on their debut full-length. Their self-titled debut EP is out now on Universal. Grab it via iTunes here.
