Africa is everywhere it seems these days, and in fashion, I’m loving SUNO‘s forth collection of Kenyan inspired patterns for Spring Summer 2010.
Inspired by the women of coastal East Africa and the women of downtown New York, SUNO was formed from Max Oaterweis’ passion for collecting Kenyan textiles while traveling between the two the cities. With the desire to utilize his collection and showcase the local Kenyan artisans, Oaterweis decided to design his first line in 2008 using vintage kangas, making each piece truly one of a kind.
Today, SUNO’s collections are designed in New York’s garment district and then sent to Kenya to be made in small workshops by local artisans. SUNO hopes that by building a successful company and relationship with the Kenyan people they will have an impact on a lasting economic and social change.
