Grime legend Skepta took the stage at the Brit Awards last night to perform his hit “Shut Down.”
While the Brits put in effort to include Skepta as one of their nominees up for three awards last night, Skepta unsurprisingly went home empty-handed, and his performance aired later in the ceremony and about half the audio was muted in anticipation he’d throw down uncensored.
The grime community has been vocal over the years about the Brits shutting grime out of nominations, despite grime music’s rising popularity beyond UK radiowaves. Grime MCs have hit a point in the UK culture where they’ve become too big to ignore, and Skepta has single-handedly been at the helm of putting grime on the global map with his last album Konichiwa.
Shitty circumstances aside, Skepta hit the massive stage by himself with only a light show to embellish the performance, and had the whole arena going off.
