Yesterday, State Street Global Advisors unveiled a new bronze statue facing the famous charging bull in New York’s financial district to mark International Women’s Day.
The statue of a young girl standing tall, which was created by artist Kristen Visbal, is meant to be a visceral reminder of the lack of women in leadership roles and to promote the need for gender equality in the business world. The bronze figure makes a bold statement with the girl facing the charging bull, standing with her hands on her hips.
In a statement, SSGA CEO Ron O’Hanley said:
“Today, we are calling on companies to take concrete steps to increase gender diversity on their boards and have issued clear guidance to help them begin to take action.”
Sometimes art can speak louder than words, so let’s hope this is a step in the right direction.
