Toronto pop-rockers Twist dropped their debut LP Spectral last summer through the city’s own Buzz Records. Blending an array of genres from electronic to classic rock, Spectral offered a pleasant taste of one of Buzz’ most promising acts. Yesterday, the band shared news of their forthcoming EP entitled Benefits, produced by Brian Borcherdt (Holy Fuck) and have shared the title track to coincide with the announcement.

“Benefits” find Twist’s singer-songwriter Laura Hermiston reflecting on the struggle to maintain a sense of financial stability in a world that can be unkind to artistic ambitions like her own. The track is tinged with hints of psych and shoegaze, driven by a harmonic bass line that brings Hermiston’s dreamy vocals to the forefront.

As she explains:

The song is about the American Dream in a sense, and the struggle to obtain financial stability. It’s easy to get in a routine where you work hard and struggle to make ends meet but lose sight of what you are working towards. Have you taken a moment to look at the big picture and reassess what you are doing? Maybe the plans you had 5 or 10 years ago have been forgotten or pushed aside, or maybe things occurred in your life that forced you to change your goals.

Benefits EP is due out September 22 and will see Twist hitting the road for a series of North American dates that will include stints alongside Partner, Weaves and Crocodiles. Listen to “Benefits” and see below for the EP’s tracklist, as well as all upcoming tour dates.
