Toronto’s West Queen West institution The Drake Hotel officially opened its new modern wing late last year and we were lucky enough to get in for a staycation to experience the space. Adding to the existing 19-rooms in the OG side of the property, the five-story modern addition features 32 rooms across five stories, including a breathtaking rooftop suite, an intimate lobby bar and generous lounge space, a green room for artists, and a semi-private meeting space.
Keeping true to their ethos, the property was imagined and created by several creative studios based in Toronto including Diamond Schmitt Architects, DesignAgency, CompanyCompany, The Drake’s in-house design team, and art curator Ashley Mulvihill.
The rooms strike a balance between functional, cool and quirky, and feature rich colours, terrazzo showers, Frette linens, custom robes, Malin + Goetz bath products, with locally sourced mini-bar treats. Check out our room tour on TikTok.
Housed in a striking polished stainless steel boxcar, the rooftop Terrace Suite features two bedrooms, two full washrooms with rich green art deco tiling, a kitchenette bar, a large living room with vintage furniture and an oversized outdoor terrace with a sweeping view of the city. Take a tour over on TikTok.
The guest rooms and hotel common spaces are home to a wide variety of artwork by local and international artists. Some of the most striking pieces include a multi-dimensional mixed medium artwork of linen, oil paint and sculpture by Toronto’s own Stephanie Temma Hier entitled Evening Shadows and a Skittish Whisper, a 3-D generated animated video titled Botanist by Ajax-Ontario’s Malik McCoy, a bright illustration by Iqaluit’s Saimaiyu Akesuk, and Newspaper by Micah Lexier which was commissioned specially for the opening.
They’ve pulled out all the stops to create a neighbourhood hub for locals and visitors alike bridging the worlds of art and design with intentional hospitality. We captured some photos on 35mm film during our stay which you can check out on Instagram below. For more information on The Drake Hotel or to book your stay, click here.
