Among the latest expressions of Tiffany & Co.’s storied high jewellery tradition is the Legendary Bird: The Sapphire Edition, a truly unique masterpiece that celebrates the enduring legacy of Jean Schlumberger’s iconic Bird on a Rock while showcasing the House’s extraordinary craftsmanship. Presented by Nathalie Verdeille, Senior Vice President and Chief Artistic Officer of Jewellery and High Jewellery, in collaboration with the Tiffany Design Studio, the singular creation sits at the pinnacle of Tiffany’s artistry.
Centred around an unenhanced 34.48 carat Madagascar sapphire, the extraordinary design is composed of black opal doublets, mother-of-pearl, diamonds and rubies, all meticulously handcrafted in 18-karat yellow gold and platinum by Tiffany’s High Jewellery artisans.
Inspired by the quiet transformations of nature, the composition features the delicate Bird on a Rock motifs hovering above a sculptural floral arrangement inspired by Tiffany’s historic orchid designs. The dimensional construction required each black opal doublet to be individually cut and bezel set, creating remarkable depth while showcasing the House’s technical expertise. Nathalie Verdeille describes the piece as an exploration of “nature in perpetual renewal,” where subtle details gradually reveal themselves upon closer inspection.
The whimsical motif has become one of Tiffany & Co.’s most enduring emblems since its introduction in 1965, and this year’s sapphire edition continues the tradition, serving as both a tribute to Tiffany’s storied heritage and a compelling expression of its contemporary creative vision.
