It’s dubbed “the Oscars of the fashion world” and with it brings a bunch of stars hyped to play dress up.

This year the Met’s theme was “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Much of the looks we saw were in traditional black, red, gold or white tones, and of course, there were crosses, embellishments, feathers, regal headpieces—the works.

The biggest trend: the oversized, embellished, eye-catching train.

Held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the luxe show and exhibit was initially going to incorporate other religions (such as Buddhism and Judaism), but curator Andrew Bolton noticed that most of the pieces he researched had been inspired by Catholicism. The exhibit houses over 150 designer pieces.

“I was worried that it might be misinterpreted, that the other four religions might seem like tokens,” he told Observer.com. “And when the Vatican came on board, it made the imbalance even greater. So I decided to focus on Catholicism because the body of material was stronger.”

Yes, the Vatican loaned special artifacts, some that have never left the Vatican walls before.

Here are some of the best looks from stars who paid attention to the theme and made it their own.

Those boots!

Lana Del Rey and Jared Leto made Gucci proud. They’re posing here with Gucci‘s creative director, Alessandro Michele.

Leto wore a custom Gucci silk moiré one-button jacket with a velvet oversized lapel embroidered with three eye golden angles. He also wore silk trousers, a silk shirt with a bow and embroidered liturgical stole and black leather Horsebit boots. The aged gold metal crown completes the look as does the two tiger head broaches.

Lana Del Rey wore a custom Gucci silk cady and lace gown. The bodice features ‘The Seven Sorrows of Mary’ with the initials LDR on the sacred heart. The skirt features hand stitched gold metal and coloured silk thread embroidery inspired by baroque floral motifs and daggers with a pleated tulle and lace underskirt. The handmade headpiece has painted feathers and a crystal halo. The handmade antique glass stick represents the eyes of Saint Lucy.

One of the big designers of the night was Prabal Gurung. The young designer outfitted Hailee Steinfeld, Ashley Graham, Deepika Padukone and our choice pick, Diana Kruger.

The Queen of Pop doesn’t joke around, this is hands down our favourite crown of the night. Her “Church Goth” look was put together by longtime collaborator, Jean Paul Gaultier.

Chadwick Boseman gave a solid statement in Versace. The Black Panther star also sported some sweet Christian Louboutin loafers.

Blake Lively previously said this was her “favorite dress ever” and we’re into it. Lively wore Christian Louboutin shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewellery (estimated to be worth over $2 million) to add to her already brilliant Versace gown. Apparently, the dress was so big it needed its own bus to transport it to the event.

Rihanna (Maison Margiela)

Jared Leto (Gucci)
