Swatch is officially stepping into deeper waters with its next collaboration, this time teaming up with Audemars Piguet for a release called the Royal Pop, dropping this Friday, May 16. After turning Omega’s Speedmaster and Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms into accessible hype pieces, Swatch is now taking on one of the most untouchable names in watchmaking.
That is what makes this one hit differently. Audemars Piguet sits inside the “Holy Trinity” of Swiss watchmakers alongside Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin, and the Royal Oak remains one of the most recognizable luxury sports watches ever made. Gérald Genta’s integrated bracelet design has been a status symbol for generations, with standard Royal Oaks easily clearing $40,000. The Swatch versions are expected to retail somewhere between $300 and $500.
Details are still limited, but Swatch and AP have teased the project under “Royal” and “Pop” branding, with reports pointing to colourful designs and possible references to Swatch’s vintage Pop line, rather than a straight bioceramic Royal Oak remake.
Even with very little officially confirmed, the rollout has already begun to spiral into full-on watch-release chaos. People have reportedly already been spotted lining up outside select Swatch stores around the world ahead of Friday’s drop, hoping to get ahead of what will almost definitely be limited availability and resale madness.
Unlike the Omega and Blancpain projects, this collaboration is not happening under the same corporate roof, which makes the move feel even bigger. AP has spent decades building the Royal Oak into a symbol of exclusivity. Swatch turning that energy into something attainable is either the smartest thing luxury watches could do right now or complete chaos, depending on who you ask.
For context, the leaked images circulating have not been confirmed by either brand. For now, the collaboration and Friday release date are the only official details.
