It’s been about 25 years since Micheal Jordan teamed up with Bugs Bunny and the Tune Squad to defeat the Monstars in a game of intergalactic basketball, forever changing the relationship between sports and cartoons. Today we get a peek at what the next generation of cartoon crossover basketball will look like with the release of the Space Jam: A New Legacy poster and line of sneakers and apparel set to drop centred around the new film. The poster (below) features NBA star LeBron James soaring over the Tune Squad, with an emphasis on Nike’s new LeBron 19 sneaker design. It’s a good marketing manoeuver for Nike’s new sneaker launch.
In addition to the LeBron 19, Nike is also releasing three new styles of the LeBron 18 Low, with colour designs intended to evoke some of the most memorable faceoffs in Looney Tunes history, including Bugs vs. Marvin the Martian, Tweety Bird vs. Sylvester, and Road Runner vs. Wile. E. Coyote. There will also be a pair of Air Force 1s for toddlers featuring different characters, and a Bugs Bunny Lebron 18. With the full lineup of sneakers, the launch also includes a number of new apparel pieces, including Nike and LeBron-branded uniforms for both the Tune Squad and the Goon Squad, a Tune Squad varsity jacket, and more.
With this Space Jam release Converse is getting some love, with the release of new shoe options featuring members of the Tune Squad. Probably the strongest piece in this side of the collection comes in the for of the Lola Bunny Pro Leather which features a fur Star Chevron logo and an embroidered Lola graphic on the heel. The apparel features graphic t-shirts, shorts, hoodies, and a bag.
Space Jam: A New Legacy premieres in theatres and on HBO Max on July 16. The collections from Nike and Converse will launch in July on nike.com, SNKRS, and at select retailers.
