We recently had the chance to give the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens a try to shoot street style photos in Austin and cover Toronto Fashion Week. We’ve been in the market for a long lens for a while so after giving the amazing 85mm a try, we thought another prime lens slightly lower in price point with a little longer range in the macro category would perfect for capturing the minute details of an outfit.
Packing an advanced optical formula with a three group floating element system, this lens was an excellent lens for shooting runway fashion. The ultrasonic functionality of the lens provided quick focusing at just about any distance, and the manual focusing ring was beneficial for correcting and sharpening the subject even when in auto focus mode. We also liked that this lens had a focus range limiter which allowed us to set up the focusing distance and shorten the autofocus time, which when shooting a runway show, can really make or break your photos.
Retailing for about $630 CDN, this lens was a beauty to use for the price point for both shooting runway photography and still portrait street style shots. We wouldn’t recommend splurging on the $1000 L series of this lens unless you really need image stabilization.
