Red Bull Music Academy in NYC is one of the cooler multi-media festivals. RBMA packs in a month’s worth of shows, parties, panels, and films. This week, we attended the Beatmakers Roundtable, Trapped edition, featuring the biggest producers in hip hop right now.
Metro Boomin, Sonny Digital, and Zaytoven played us their favorite tracks and talked about how they got to work with Gucci Mane, Drake, Future, Migos and more. The trio make up almost two generations of Atlanta trap. Zaytoven (“Ice On Me” by Gucci Mane) directly influenced Sonny Digital (“Racks” by YC ft. Future) and Metro Boomin. They all had different definitions for what trap music represents, especially since EDM has turned into a different beast. Whatever your thoughts may be on that, Zaytoven is proud of how far and wide the genre has gone, influencing music lovers all over the world.
It’s obvious the three producers not only have a strong professional relationship (they spoke of sending each other beats to improve on), but they also had nothing but positive things to say about the Atlanta community. If there’s any competitive spirit between them, it only drives them to create better work. Zaytoven doesn’t produce on a laptop like Metro Boomin and Sonny Digital. In that sense, he’s in a separate lane, creating beats and sounds from scratch. He got into music through church as a child. In fact, he’s still the organist at his local church!
Check out some soundbites from the talk below as well as photos of the panel and after party. RBMA continues throughout May. Check out the full schedule here.
