At Prada, even the most familiar thing can become completely unfamiliar. For Spring/Summer 2027, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons took one of fashion’s most elemental garments, the skirt, and subjected it to the kind of obsessive interrogation that has long made Prada so fascinating.
Presented as usual at Fondazione Prada in Milan, the collection stayed within the parameters of that single object. It sounds restrictive, but in Prada’s hands, it became anything but.
The skirt becomes a framework for endless variation, its graphic, linear silhouette providing a fixed point for experimentation. That tension between strict parameters and creative freedom feels quintessentially Prada, particularly in the hands of Miuccia and Raf.
Function becomes decoration. Velcro appears in contrasting colours beneath crystal embroidery while retaining its practical purpose while oversized metal snaps become jewellery, and crinoline, normally hidden inside a garment, emerged as a decorative layer or protective shell.
The same idea extends to the materials. Industrial fabrics including ciré matt and Re-Nylon are translated into pleating, cotton is made to resemble leather or suede, and crystal recreates the effect of guipure lace. A pleated skirt can expand away from the body, its excess material held in the hand and transformed through movement.
True to form, nothing is quite what it appears to be at first.
The collection also considers how a garment changes through its relationship with everything around it. The skirt becomes a fragment rather than a finished object, with meaning shifting when paired with a sweater, shirt or bra top.
To take something we think we understand and ask how many other things it could become is indeed a very Prada way of thinking. Rather than searching for something entirely new, Miuccia and Raf look again at something already known, finding seemingly endless possibilities inside a single, familiar form.
