After spending the weekend in New York we made it back just in time to catch the first day of Toronto Fashion Week (World MasterCard Fashion Week) which once again took place at David Pecaut Square. The schedule had somewhat of an overhaul compared to what we’ve seen in past seasons with some designers opting not to show, making room for schedule changes and new talent. Starting the festivities off was the always highly anticipated Pink Tartan presentation for the spring summer 2015 season.
The classic rock soundtrack had us dreaming of the 1970s while the models in swimwear and cover ups strolled with casual elegance in a monochromatic palette. Suede vests, elongated fringe, high-waisted jumpsuits, and plunging necklines with scarf ties had us dreaming of Farrah Fawcet and Goldie Hawn in Overboard without all the bad teased hair and over the top accessories. Monochromatic faded into navy with contrast piping and touches of camel eventually brightened up into some fabulous head to toe floral and geometric textiles applied to elegant silk coats, scarves, and suits motioning again towards that vintage inspiration.
Next up was the Mercedes-Benz Start Up presentation which usually takes place mid-week. The new time slot made for a fitting start to the week as six finalists battled it out on the runway for the coveted title of Mercedes-Benz Start Up Awarded Designer, a bursary, and a spot next season at fashion week. After presentations from Beaufille, Laura Siegel, Black.I, VAIKEN, and Eliza Faulkner, Sid Neigum’s collection closed out the show and after some quick deliberation, Neigum was awarded the much deserved title.
Joe Fresh kicked off the week with a proper party, opting out of his usual much hyped colourful runway presentation and enlisting one massive surprise guest and DJ. Mr. Mimran greeted guests as they headed into the studio with fittingly orange beverages in hind. There was a knowing buzz in the air that a special surprise was planned for the refreshingly unusual evening, and everyone waited anxiously for the announcement while sipping cocktails and reflecting on the shows of the evening. A brass band came out to play along with Pharrell’s “Get Lucky” and a confetti cannon went off, but still the surprise guest had not shown. Finally after about an hour, they announced that Solange had arrived and was about to perform a surprise DJ set for everyone. She played retro hits by LL Cool J, TLC, and among other epic hip hop tracks that got a tired crowd dancing.
