Nintendo has officially unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to its popular hybrid gaming console, slated for release on June 5, 2025, with a suggested retail price of $449.99. The Nintendo Switch 2 features a larger 7.9-inch built-in LCD screen that displays in full HD at 1080p, providing a more immersive visual experience. The console maintains its hybrid design, allowing for handheld, tabletop, and TV modes. In TV mode, it supports up to 4K resolution, enhanced by HDR and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support for smoother and more vibrant visuals.
A notable change is the introduction of Joy-Con 2 controllers, which attach magnetically to the console, replacing the previous sliding rail mechanism. This new attachment method aims to enhance durability and ease of use. Additionally, the right Joy-Con 2 includes a new square-shaped C button, which activates the GameChat feature—a Discord-like social layer that allows users to voice and video chat with friends using a built-in microphone and an optional external camera. Access to GameChat requires a Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) subscription after a free trial period ending March 31, 2026. Without an active NSO membership, the C button will not function and cannot be remapped. NSO membership costs $19.99 annually and is now positioned as essential for the full Switch 2 experience.
The Switch 2 is equipped with an extra USB-C port, facilitating more versatile charging and connectivity options. The console also features a redesigned U-shaped kickstand, providing improved stability during tabletop mode. Reports suggest the inclusion of NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology, enabling higher resolutions and enhanced performance, potentially supporting 4K output when docked.

Nintendo has confirmed that Switch 2 will be backward and compatible with existing Switch games, allowing players to continue enjoying their current library. However, some titles may not be fully compatible, and specific details are expected to be clarified in future announcements. The Nintendo Switch 2 will launch with titles such as Mario Kart World, priced at $79.99. Additionally, enhanced versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will be available, featuring improved resolution and performance, including significantly reduced loading times. These versions will be offered as free upgrades for NSO+ Expansion Pack subscribers, with other options available for existing game owners.
