Miu Miu returns to Art Basel Paris for the third year as Public Program Official Partner, inviting French filmmaker Alice Diop to transform Palais d’Iéna with Geste de Consolation (Gesture of Consolation).
Diop’s first exhibition project combines film, photography, sculpture, poetry, dance, music and performance, exploring the representation of Black women throughout art history and its influence on the present. Four interconnected spaces move from the work of Zanele Muholi to Chambre à soi, a performance arena, and ultimately Simone Leigh’s monumental Sentinel (Mami Wata).
Conceived as a kind of cinematic montage, the project becomes a meditation on memory, representation and repair, bringing together different voices, disciplines and perspectives within the monumental Parisian space.
Geste de Consolation runs October 21–25, with a preview on October 20.
