Do you hear that roar of the engine? That’s the new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology coming! Yes, you read that right. There is, in fact, a new G-Wagen featuring electric technology. While I am happy that Mercedes has eased up on its zeal for a fully electric fleet by 2030, I am happy to see that the iconic G-Class is getting into the EQ game as that big-bodied bad boy of a ride could use an EV upgrade in technology. Nothing accelerates quite like an EV, or a G-Wagen for that matter, just different sides of the spectrum.

The new electric G-Class still looks the same from the outside with its distinctive eye-catching silhouette, but the inside is beefed up for the added needs of an electric vehicle. The already robust ladder frame has been modified and reinforced to integrate with the electric drive. It is fitted with an independent double-wishbone front suspension and a newly developed solid rear axle. The high-voltage lithium-ion battery has a 116-kWh usable capacity and has been placed and integrated into the ladder frame for a low centre of gravity. The preliminary technical details on the battery are 27.7 and 30.3 kWh of energy per 62 miles travelled, which basically is an estimated range of 200-220 miles/320-350 kilometres per charge. Decent.

The thing about EVs that’s cool is how silent they are. It’s so good that it’s dangerous, and nowadays, electric vehicles have to make that neat sci-fi-like humming sound so you know it’s coming. The thing about G-Wagen’s is that they roar like a beast and you can feel the rumble through the whole frame and your body. Well, thankfully, Mercedes introduces the G-ROAR!  G-ROAR brings a unique sound experience to the Mercedes-Benz G 580 EQ. Inspired by the famous G-Class combustion engine sounds, the electric version creates a deep bass and sonorous tone created to deliberately set it apart from the sound other all-electric models from Mercedes-Benz make. Moreover, you can change the sound output with the different ELECTRIC DYNAMIC SELECT drive program, with the restrained “Comfort” to the loud and powerful “Sport.”
