The MisterWives returned to Toronto on Thursday for the third time, this being their second headlining show, and having once opened for fellow East coast band Bleachers.
The Mod Club was nearly packed, filled with young couples (no one told me it was date night) and teenage girls who were all having different versions of a good time. The stage was decorated quite fittingly to resemble something you might see in a scrapbook. Vine-covered speakers and floral-entwined microphone stands added to the theatrical vibe; it probably could have doubled for a Midsummer Night’s Dream set.
Lead singer Mandy Leed is sort of the older sister you always wanted, taking breaks between having fun to dole out advice to her (mostly) female teenage audience. Despite being one of six people performing on a very small platform, Mandy commanded the stage, not to mention the audience’s attention, for the duration of the show.
Their visit to Toronto wouldn’t be complete without a cover of Toronto’s very own The Weeknd’s hit I Can’t Feel My Face, which naturally transitioned into MJ’s PYT. If there’s one thing you’re guaranteed at a MisterWives show, it’s a dance party.
