LIVE MUSIC: GIRLPOOL AT THE SMILING BUDDHA, TORONTO

Los Angeles punk duo Girlpool played on Thursday night to a packed out crowd at The Smiling Buddha. With an adoring, and somewhat intensely young, crowd massing around the stage the band took to the stage and launched straight into their brand of stripped down harmonic punk rock. Playing off the back of their debut record ‘Before The World Was Big’ it became quickly apparent that the crowd had used the intervening 4 months to memorize all the words from the record. Their spare and intense vocal harmonies fit perfectly over the distorted guitar and simple bass lines. While their set went as quick as it came, they no doubt left their adoring crowd with a great impression.

Opening the night was New York band Eskimeaux, the recording project of Gabrielle Smith. With a full band supporting her on the road, her songs were leant a little bit more presence and she even managed to lead a decent call and response singing from the crowd.
