Day 3

The third day of the festival was instantly off to the races with an energetic set by Afrikana Soul Sister, the afro-electro group getting the noon crowd dancing even at the start of the day. They were followed by 8 piece stomping folk band Canailles who kept the energy going and proved to be a massively fun live show.

Afterwards was a ride just out of town to Pub Chez Gibb for a special intimate set by Laura Sauvage, the solo project of Vivianne Roy from Les Hay Babies’. Even with her new record ‘The Beautiful’ coming out soon, the set largely focused on tracks from her first record which came across very well in the tight setting. While she admitted she does get nervous on stage in an interview, she insisted several times throughout the show that “This is my show!” perhaps as a way of encouraging herself on. She even managed to get some laughs, recounting an anecdote about her song “Fucker (Stole My Phone)” and about how it happened at a New York A Place To Bury Strangers show. The real treat though was during set closer “Monkeys in Space” which saw her drop her (gorgeous) guitar and venture into the crowd for a performance that would have made Iggy Pop proud.

That evening was capped off by performances by three punk bands. Starting with Lubik, a band from just north of the city, that brought out a big local crowd. They were a blast to see as singer Alexandre Picard bounced around the stage and spent a ton of time working the crowd at the edge of the stage. Up next was France’s The Decline ! answering once and for all the question of what would happened if the Dropkick Murphy’s were from France. The five piece tore through their set in constant motion, with guitarists constantly hopping up and down from risers and a ton of jump kicks to boot. It’s always impressive when a band is able to perform in a language that isn’t their native one, and The Decline !’s english performance was definitely great. Closing out the night was Les Dales Hawerchuk whose sound fell a bit closer to hard rock than the other bands of the night, and most of their set fell a bit flat. However the second they busted out their big hit, the crowd absolutely lost their mind, if only they could have carried that energy for their whole set.
