What a time to be alive! Arriving at the heels of Beyonce’s empowering message for Black women in Lemonade, British songstress Laura Mvula shared the music video for her fantastic track “Phenomenal Woman.” The song takes its title from Maya Angelou’s poem of the same name.
I wrote this anthem to raise up our women. We are the givers of life, we are the children bearers, the nurturers, the heroines, we are extraordinary in our ordinariness, we fly, we fight we are ‘Phenomenal Woman’.
The music video opens in the Bo-Kaap neighborhood of Cape Town, South Africa as Mvula struts through the streets, gathering and encouraging women as she goes. The video quite literally explodes with color. The funk anthem will be on The Dreaming Room, Mvula’s follow up to her excellent debut album Sing To The Moon.
