Kith and BMW are taking their long-running collaboration to the next level with two one-of-one X5s that bring together the model’s past and future.
Created by Kith founder Ronnie Fieg, the project pairs a comprehensively restored 2000 BMW X5 E53 with a bespoke interpretation of the forthcoming 2027 BMW X5, marking the fourth chapter of the Kith for BMW partnership. The two vehicles were unveiled alongside the latest Kith for BMW collection during Monterey Car Week.
The older X5 is the more unexpected of the pair. Fieg commissioned a full restoration of the first-generation E53 before replacing its original engine with BMW’s naturally aspirated 5.0-litre S85 V10, the same engine family associated with the E60 M5. The V10 is paired with a six-speed manual transmission, while the SUV retains its all-wheel-drive system. Custom exhaust components, BMW M Sport brakes and revised suspension complete the transformation.
Inside, the restored X5 receives a black leather cabin with Kith monogram detailing, while its exterior is finished in Frozen Titanium Silver. The result is less traditional restomod than a carefully considered BMW fantasy: an early X5 with the powertrain enthusiasts never got from the factory.
Its modern counterpart looks toward where the X5 is headed. The bespoke 2027 BMW X5 by Kith previews the fifth-generation X5 and features a similarly restrained Frozen Titanium Silver exterior with a custom Kith interior. The concept uses BMW’s 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, while the new X5 architecture is designed to accommodate a broader range of powertrains.
Together, the two cars create a visual conversation between more than two decades of BMW design and engineering. One represents the raw, mechanical appeal of the original X5, while the other offers a glimpse at a far more digitally integrated future.
Neither bespoke X5 is being offered for public sale. Instead, they function as the ultimate expressions of the collaboration, demonstrating what happens when a fashion label with a serious automotive obsession gets to reinterpret one of BMW’s most recognizable models.
