There are two possible routes for artists to take while tackling covers. One would be to deliver a note-by-note replica of the original, perhaps with some of the performing artist’s personal flair sprinkled throughout. The other — a far less boring approach — would be to completely reimagine the track, shifting its tone altogether.
The latter strategy was employed by Jorja Smith, who recently stopped by Metropolis Studios in London to record a session for Spotify. Covering Frank Ocean’s upbeat Channel ORANGE track “Lost,” the emerging UK songstress turns it into a somber ballad, stripping much of the instrumentation while opting to spotlight her own vocals.
