Taking place on a somewhat gloomy June Sunday in Paris, Véronique Nichanian of the iconic fashion house Hermes presented their Men’s summer 2023 runway show. Taking place at the very apropos Manufacture des Gobelins, a historically significant tapestry manufacturing centre, the show started off with an immediate burst of colour, made all the more prominent because of the weather. As the models walked the cobbled courtyard of the runway, they created the colourful ideal of summer to come.
With vibrant and bright lemonades, lagoons, lilacs, bubblegums, melons, and more, the colours exuded a sense of joy and possibility that summer imparts on us. Layered with lightness, transparency, and deconstruction mixed with a playful formality, the pieces ran the gambit of timeless meets trendy. Once again we see patterns breaking the mould and seemingly moving on their own, a theme across several Maison’s collections this year. Several pieces honed in on the house iconography, with house patches and pegasus on jackets and shirts. Seahorses and crayfish make bold appearances as well.
In the form of accessories, the Maison displayed some stunning specially-commissioned masculine Birkins. Oh, la la. Garden Party Voyage bags in plain, striped or Hermès Pacific printed H canvas and Sombrero calfskin, bags in canvas and Clémence bull calf, Bolide Good Vibes bags in Togo and Swift calfskin, Haut à courroies bags in Evercolor and Evergrain calfskin with distorted checks, beach bag in cotton canvas with Après la vague print.
The endless parade of bucket hats in Berlingot canvas or in light technical satin were boldly presented, another trend spotted across several collections this season. Lots of jewelry, bracelets, rings, badges, earrings, necklaces all in palladium-finish metal and Swift calfskin.
Finally, it wouldn’t be summer without a healthy dose of light airy footwear which we got in abundance in the form of sandals in neoprene canvas, and calfskin, plus sneakers in parachute canvas and leather.
