Last Thursday Toronto based artist Gari Taxali popped up, quite literally, to the top of our radar. Showcasing a small collection of graphic pop art temporarily at Waddington’s on King East, we saw influences from his Indian heritage, classic cartoons like tin tin, and that infamous monopoly man, among others in his work.
The body of work, titled Shanti Town, in application appeared on a massive array of materials including antiquey papers that may have at one time been ads, ripped off covers from vintage books, glossy wooden canvases, silk scarves, vinyl toys, and alcohol bottle labels.
The launch event brought out Toronto’s finest art community and Taxali greeted them with profuse thanks and lots of sparkling wine throughout the evening. Take a look through our photos from the launch of Shanti Town which is on view through February 9th at Waddington’s.
