We stumbled upon Belle’s Diner in Fitzroy one early afternoon as we waited for The Everleigh to open upstairs. We were pleasantly delighted and welcomed by one of the waitresses who wore an Austra t-shirt, fresh off her tour date a few days prior to our visit. With a varied menu of brunch, lunch, and late night menu options, Belle’s was a modern Australian take on the classic American diner.
We lined our stomaches with deep fried pickles to start, and a set of four adorable sliders made from pulled pork, saganaki pesto and shredded red peppers, fish cake with dill cream and pickle, and a classic beef paddy with mustard and pickle. On the side we decided to try the truffled macaroni cheese made with gouda, feta and cheddar, which was delicious, though not out of the ordinary, as well as the Russian salad, which as a well rounded combination of potato, peas, egg, gherkins, capers, and bacon dressed with a parsley dill cream.
To drink they has a short but tempting cocktail list, milkshakes, local beers, and ciders, but since we were preparing for an evening of heavy indigence upstairs at The Everleigh, we decided to try one of their hibiscus sodas, which was served cutely with a hot pink striped straw.
We loved Belle’s clean yet kitchy decor and their to die for comfort food. We’d highly recommend Belle’s Diner for a casual brunch, lunch, or a late night snack, and since they’re open daily from 11:30am till late, all three are possibilities!
