This past Monday we hit up one of our favourite yearly TIFF events, the annual Festival Music House showcase that first started back in 2010. This year the party took place at the Velvet Underground and was a one night only affair featuring music by top 40 radio-friendly headliner Dragonette in addition to performances by Jessy Lanza, Charlotte Day Wilson and Modern Space. While we were slightly underwhelmed with last year’s line-up, we were incredibly stoked to see newcomer Charlotte Day Wilson & Polaris short-list nominee Jessy Lanza on the bill. Charlotte Day Wilson brought her cool brand of jazz inspired R&B to the party but we were annoyed with how much people were talking over her set. Is it hip to shush industry insiders? We were quite tempted. Never the less, we still vibed out as she played cuts off her debut EP CDW and we enjoyed every second of it. The real highlight of the evening was Jessy Lanza who managed to get even the suits in the building dancing whilst playing cuts of her incredible sophomore album Oh No. We even caught Canadian cool girl Kiesza busting a move in the audience. Kardinal Offishall hosted the whole night and even closed it with an impressive DJ set that had us staying longer than we anticipated. Shout outs to the complimentary P&L burgers for keeping us going. All in all it was a good time and a great celebration of some sweet local tunes. Next year better bring it!
