Following this years “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” the Metropolitan Museum of Art has officially announced the theme for next years Met Gala will be Comme des Garçons’s Rei Kawakubo. Taking place on May 1st, the gala will host hundreds of celebrities and industry heavyweights to showcase the museums first monograph exhibition to focus on a living designer since of course 1983’s Yves Saint Laurent exhibit.
“Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past forty years. By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.” – Andrew Bolton, Costume Institute Curator
The exhibit will host 120 Comme des Garçons womenswear designs by Kawakubo from present day to 1981, arranged at we level (instead of behind glass) by contrasting themes, a nod to the designers obsession with inbetweenness.
We can’t wait to see the exhibition and the spectacles the gala inevitably has in store.
