With rumours spiralling about a new folding phone, Apple has officially unveiled iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, bringing some of the biggest upgrades yet to the iPhone’s camera, performance, battery life, and a swanky new burgundy.
The standout feature is a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, yet another first for iPhone. Six laser-cut blades allow the aperture to shift automatically based on lighting and depth of field, while giving photographers manual control through the new Pro Controls in the Camera app. The system also introduces upgraded Photographic Styles, texture and grain controls (yay), and new video capabilities including 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse.
Under the hood, both models run on Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process. Combined with a redesigned vapour chamber, Apple says the system delivers its highest sustained performance in an iPhone, while the new Neural Engine is designed to accelerate on-device AI.
There’s also a new approach to image authenticity. Apple Reference Image can create a digitally signed reference image from the camera’s sensor data, allowing users to compare an original capture with subsequent edits. It arrives along with expanded AI image metadata and planned SynthID support.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max also feature a redesigned, smaller Dynamic Island (do we even use it now?), Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Apple’s new C2 cellular modem. The Pro Max offers up to 45 hours of video playback, the longest battery life yet on an iPhone.
Available in black, silver, glacier and a gorgeous new burgundy colour, iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,749 CAD, while iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,899 CAD. Pre-orders open September 12, with iOS 27 and the next generation of Apple Intelligence, rolling out September 14, and both models arriving September 18.
