In a consumer world of never-ending collabs, it was only a matter of time before something like this happened. Today, two iconic German brands have announced their new collaborative partnership, adidas and RIMOWA with an inaugural capsule collection. What’s exciting is that the collection will be made exclusively made in Germany, which always means the shoes are of next-level quality when the three-stripes make their footwear at home. The cross-category collection will feature two contemporary designs: RIMOWA’s first-ever aluminum backpack and an ADIDAS NMD_S1 sneaker. Both pieces are inspired by each other and are meant to be taken on outdoor adventures.
The RIMOWA x ADIDAS NMD_BACKPACK features some new technical solutions that make it suitable for outdoor and overnight trips. Made from RIMOWA’s signature aluminum and featuring several functional little design add-ons, like padded utility shoulder straps made from rope weight-bearing straps with grab handles. The piece also features foam ridges inspired by ADIDAS Boost for comfort and elasticated webbing running through its middle to secure the backpack onto the suitcase’s telescopic tubes. To allow for flat packing, a detachable gusset opens the backpack with two deep zipped pockets and a 16-inch laptop pocket inside. It is pretty cool, but also it’s a RIMOWA suitcase Frankensteined into backpack form. This is kind of weird considering RIMOWA makes beautiful backpacks. As mentioned, in addition to the suitcase backpack, a pair of pretty solid ADIDAS NMD_S1 sneakers has also been made for this collaboration. The RIMOWA x ADIDAS NMD_S features the brand’s signature Primeknit uppers in a titanium-inspired colourway and a flexible ADIDAS Boost midsole in a light, close-to-a-translucent base colour. Featured on the midsole are the coordinates of both brands’ respective headquarters in Germany and a ‘Made in Germany’ imprint. To coordinate with the backpack, the shoelaces come in the same shade of orange to create some synergy between the two items.
