I am definitely giving old man UNC here, but I remember the original Game Boy, its successors, and the handheld gaming era that followed. While I loved Mario and Tetris, my real love for portable gaming came in the form of the Sega Game Gear. It was in colour, the games looked incredible by 90s standards, and I still remember hunting down new titles while visiting the States as a kid. I also remember that thing absolutely destroyed AA batteries like they were tiny canapés at a fashion event. In other words, it happened quickly.

That is why the current handheld gaming PC space is such an interesting one. What was once limited by cartridges and battery packs has evolved into portable machines capable of running full PC games. Acer is now stepping into that space with the Predator Atlas 8, a Windows 11 Home handheld built around Intel’s new Arc G3 Extreme platform.
The Predator Atlas 8 launches exclusively at Best Buy on November 1 with an MSRP of $1,299.99. Preorders opened last week and sold out, with additional online orders expected when the handheld officially goes on sale alongside in-store availability.

Powered by Intel Arc G3 Extreme with Intel Arc B390 graphics, the Predator Atlas 8 brings a full Windows gaming experience to a portable device. It supports PC game libraries and Xbox Game Pass, while Intel XeSS 3 AI upscaling and multi frame generation are designed to improve performance in supported games.

The handheld features an 8 inch WUXGA touchscreen with a 120 Hz variable refresh rate, up to 500 nits of brightness, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus with DXC technology. Acer also includes an 80 Wh battery, AeroBlade cooling, magnetic TMR joysticks, and dual mode Hall effect triggers.
The Best Buy launch model comes with 24 GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 512 GB PCIe Gen 4 SSD. Connectivity includes dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, Wi Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, a UHS II microSD card reader, and a headphone jack.
Handheld gaming has come a long way since carrying extra batteries was part of the experience. The Predator Atlas 8 is Acer’s entry into the premium Windows handheld space, bringing together modern PC hardware with the portability that made handheld gaming special in the first place.
