Mercedes-Benz is giving its smallest SUV a serious glow-up. The all-new 2028 GLA gets sharper styling, more room and, perhaps most importantly, a choice between fully electric and hybrid power.
On the outside, the GLA looks more confident without going overboard. A longer wheelbase, lower roofline and wider rear track give it a stronger stance, while the cleaner bodywork keeps things relatively understated. The available illuminated iconic grille is a nice touch, particularly when the sun goes down.
Inside is where the biggest changes show up. There is more room, a standard panoramic glass roof and an available MBUX Superscreen running across the dashboard. Mercedes-Benz has also introduced its latest MBUX Virtual Assistant, which uses generative AI to make interacting with the car feel a little more natural. Google-based navigation can also handle routes and charging stops for EV drivers.
The electric GLA is expected to offer up to 657 kilometres of preliminary WLTP range, with its 800-volt architecture capable of adding up to 270 kilometres in 10 minutes under ideal conditions. The 48-volt hybrid is aimed at drivers who want some electrification without going fully electric, including electric driving during certain low-speed situations.
And it is still an SUV. There is more passenger and cargo space, available 4MATIC all-wheel drive and a TERRAIN mode for getting off the pavement. New driver assistance and parking features, plus over-the-air updates, round out the package.
We have not had the chance to get behind the wheel of the new GLA just yet, so the details here are based on information provided by Mercedes-Benz. We are looking forward to putting it to the test ourselves and seeing how it actually feels when the pavement opens up.
In Canada, the new GLA is expected to arrive at dealerships in the second half of 2027, with both powertrain options available. Pricing and final Canadian specifications will come closer to launch.
