Defender Rally has introduced the Defender Dakar D7X R with a fresh desert-inspired paint design ahead of its first appearance at the Dakar Rally in January 2026. Even if you are new to this world, the importance of this race is easy to understand. Dakar is often considered the most demanding motorsport event in the world. It sends competitors across thousands of kilometres of sand, rock and unpredictable terrain, creating a test that exposes every weakness in both the driver and the machine. Finishing the event is considered an achievement, and winning it is legendary.

The D7X R begins as a production Defender OCTA before being prepared for the new Stock category of the World Rally Raid Championship. It keeps the OCTA’s strong D7x body structure, its eight-speed automatic gearbox and its four-point-four-litre twin-turbo V8 running on advanced sustainable fuel. Defender Rally then adds a wider stance, a higher ride height, stronger cooling, and a new suspension system developed with German suspension specialist BILSTEIN, known worldwide for its durable, high-performance shock absorbers used in racing and heavy-duty off-road vehicles.

The interior is built for long days of competition. Drivers use an FIA-regulated navigation unit, clear race displays and custom-fitted seats designed for comfort and safety during hours of rough travel. Three spare wheels, tools and water are secured where the rear seats would normally sit. A new technology called Flight Mode even adjusts power delivery as the vehicle leaves the ground, helping it land smoothly.

Among the three driver pairings is Sara Price, a key figure in modern off-road racing. Her presence carries real significance. She brings deep desert experience and represents a broader shift in top-level motorsport where more women are stepping into leading roles. Her skill and determination add power to a team already filled with proven talent.
With more than six thousand kilometres of testing completed, Defender Rally will arrive in Saudi Arabia ready for the challenge. When the race begins on January third, the Dakar D7X R will show what the toughest Defender yet can do while reminding the world why Dakar remains the ultimate test of endurance and spirit.
