Maison Margiela has unveiled Line 2, a new chapter in its enigmatic numeric system that’s as much cultural experiment as fashion project. Since 1997, Margiela has operated within numeric codes, ranging from 0 to 23 they serve as an index for everything from couture to fragrance for the maison. The number 2 has long been left unused, a blank space in the brands mythology, until now.
Conceived as a canvas for collaboration, Line 2 leans into dualities but don’t get it twisted, this isn’t another clothing line. Chosen to “reflect the line’s double collaboration principle … represented by means of dates, time markers, visual codes, etc.” Or, as Martin Margiela once put it, “blurring the lines between art and fashion.”
The debut unfolds in Seoul, where visual artist Heemin Chung and sound artist Joyul present <Elsewhere, Rhema, Open Torso> at Margiela’s Hannam flagship store from September 3–28th. The immersive installation channels the house’s Autumn-Winter 2025 theme of memory and transformation, layering sound and image into a sensory dialogue.
Line 2 marks more than an update to their numeric system, as CEO Gaetano Sciuto told BOF, it’s about intangible products “going beyond purchasing: it’s connection, it’s community.”
A reminder that at Margiela, even a number can become a manifesto. Browse the imagery below.
