BOOK1’S DESIGN HOSTEL IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Located in the centre of Aarhus, which is the second-largest city in Denmark, BOOK1, mixes both hotel and hostel features against the architectural backdrop of what was once the city’s main library. The stairways have been, seemingly, untouched, while the ceiling lights resemble the library’s original lamps. What makes a design hostel? Guests can expect bunk bed dorms, laundry facilities, private rooms and suites, a sauna, and activities to play such as ping-pong, among other features and designs.

One cool attraction that you may not find elsewhere is the “pod dorms” which are similar to Japan’s luxury capsule hotels.

“We want to offer guests the same cool vibe you meet at our boutique hotels, but at the same time give them something unique in its own category,” said Nikolas Krabbe Bjerg, CEO of Brøchner Hotels, which owns and operates BOOK1.

The aim of the design hostel is to cater to the modern traveller. Along with housing accommodations, BOOK1 also has a new bar, lounge areas, and a food court that’s led by local food entrepreneur, MIB. Organic fare included in the “Good Morning” breakfast are all on the menu and can be enjoyed while sitting at long tables, or as takeaway.

The lobby bar

“Bunks & Buckets,” or plus size drinks, are offered at BOOK1. Also, “Bottoms Up,” or happy hour, occurs from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Coffee is readily on hand.

Go Local

Guests of BOOK 1 will get deals for local shops and restaurants in Aarhus, helping continue Brøchner Hotels push for giving back and supporting local business in the area.

CEO Nickolas Krabbe Bjerg said BOOK1 is challenging “the notion of a stay in the Nordic countries,” and believes the design hostel offers a place to hang out as well as work out of, something that might interest remote workers who are looking for new setups and experiences.

A total of 444 beds are available, from shared bunk dorms which include space for four to fourteen people, to private double rooms, to four private hostel suites. There are also larger pod dorms available for those wishing to stay with more people, and guests can choose mixed or all-female bunk bed rooms that come with a shared bathroom and toilet.

Guests can opt out of a key card and instead use their private mobile to check in and out, unlock the door, and to access their private locker. There are lighting sensors that give off soft light when others get up during the night, and sheets and towels are available for guests. You can book a single bed, an entire dorm, or one of the hostel suites.

BOOK1 follows the general requirements from the Danish health authorities.

Prices start at 175 DKK (approx. CAD$35) for a pod room bed.
