The Defender Dakar had the perfect backdrop at The Quail by The Peninsula during Monterey Car Week. Sitting beside the new road-legal model was the actual D7X R that won the 2026 Dakar Rally, still carrying the dents, scratches, and scars from its desert campaign. Defender Dakar driver Sara Price was also on hand, adding another layer of connection between the race truck and the machine it inspired. Seeing the two together made the point clear: this isn’t a styling exercise. It’s Dakar technology brought to the street.

The limited-run Defender Dakar is a road-legal evolution of the D7X R, keeping the same body architecture, transmission, driveline, and 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 from the race car. Based on Defender OCTA, the road version delivers the engine’s full 635PS and 750Nm of torque.

The hardware is built for more than appearances. A wider track, increased ride height, rally suspension, Bilstein Advanced Dampers, 35-inch All-Terrain tyres, and forged 20-inch wheels give it the capability to match its look. Dunes and Gravel drive modes join Flight Mode, a system developed from the competition car to handle extreme terrain and hard landings.

The details tell the story. Roof-mounted light pods, carbon fibre air intakes, a carbon fibre bonnet, exposed, riveted wheel arches, signature mud flaps, and added underbody protection all carry over the Dakar racer’s attitude.

Inside, Defender keeps the focus on function with unique race seats, optional four-point harnesses, helmet storage, and dedicated mounting for the spare wheel and air compressor.

Standing next to the battered D7X R at The Quail, the Defender Dakar felt exactly like what it is: a direct transfer of lessons learned from one of the toughest races in the world into a Defender built for the road. Reservations open in early 2027, with full technical details to be announced at the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia.
