If you didn’t already notice “I Can Rob You” playing at the beginning of last weeks episode of Gossip Girl, you’ll surely notice tonight when the lovely Parisian Plastiscines make their TV debut! Taylor Momsen (aka. Little J) will “rock out” to a few tracks from their new album About Love, watch the confusing and always suggestive preview for tonight’s episode here.
The french teenage chick rockers are signed to Nylon Records (the labels only band to date), and cite The Kinks, The Strokes, The Libertines, and Blondie as their influence.
They are also associated with a movement in Paris called les bébés rockers which some might say comes with some negative connotations. The French press makes the groups of bands (les bébés rockers) comprised of high school kids seem like spoiled rich children taking influence from their bohemian parent’s record collection rather than their french heritage, proclaiming themselves rock-stars at the mere age of 16 or 17.
I saw Plastiscines open for Patrick Wolf during NXNE this past June and I didn’t really feel that these girls looked very privileged, although they were beautifully dressed in rocker chic attire. The girls seemed to have a somewhat limiting sound, but to their credit Patrick Wolf’s drunken screaming from the balcony of the Mod Club was almost deafening and they did close with a Nancy Sinatra cover.
I say, good for them for taking advantage of their privileged upbringing by learning to play their instruments (while doing homework no doubt) pretty well. And come on, who doesn’t love the mere idea of an all female pop rock band from Paris that look like beautiful teenage Barbie’s!
Je t’aime Plastiscines!
Check out the video for “Barcelona” below and don’t forget to watch them on Gossip Girl tonight at 8pm on the CW network.
