Live Music: CHVRCHES & DIANA at Canadian Music Festival 2013
Last night we hit up the Virgin Mobile Mod Club to see Glasgow electro-pop upstarts CHVRCHES. As one of the buzziest bands on this years Canadian Music Festival line up, the anticipation for the show was high and the lineups for wristband holders long. This wasn’t a surprise though, as CHVRCHES are riding a tidal wave of hype after receiving an award for best non-U.S. act at SXSW last week. This was their last show of the North American tour, and their first ever Canadian date. Even if we went into the show with high expectations, CHVRCHES tunes justify the hype.
We had extra reason to be stoked for the show as local faves DIANA opened. The 4-piece outfit featured female vocals by Carmen Elle of Army Girls and a heavy dose of tenor sax. They had a cool, casual approach on stage that belied how tight they were as a band; we’re predicting big things from these guys. For more on them, check their soundcloud, because as Elle noted, they’re fairly un-Google-able and should have included a ‘v’ in their name like CHVRCHES.
After a show like this, the gimmicky ‘v’ will just be an afterthought for fans of CHVRCHES. They kicked off their set with their first single from last summer “Lies” and the adorably cute lead singer Lauren Mayberry had us eating up her vocals throughout. But the band showed they aren’t just a one-trick pony as bandmate and producer Martin Doherty took lead vocals on one track towards the end of the set.
CHVRCHES showed quite a range within their songs – from poppy electronica to a more pronounced and driving beat underneath Mayberry’s sweet voice. But the enthusiastic crowd seemed to save their loudest cheers for their much blogged singles “Recover” and “The Mother We Share” which they closed their set with. After some bubbles fell from the rafters and fan-appreciated 45 second encore break(!), the band jumped into a great version of Prince’s “I Would Die For U”. Perfect song to cap off a wicked show and since most of ten track set was new tunes, gave us lots to look forward to on their debut EP which drops.
