LIVE MUSIC: CHVRCHES AT DANFORTH MUSIC HALL, TORONTO

Scotland’s CHVRCHES marked the release of their new album Every Open Eye with a pair of sold out shows in Toronto. Monday’s show went a long way to show just how much the trio has evolved over the span of an album cycle. Singer Lauren Mayberry, formerly cemented in place by the mic stand, was suddenly very mobile, stalking back and forth across the entire stage. Flanking her were instrumentalists Iain Cook, and Martin Doherty, both of whom were also far more dynamic than in previous shows.

With the rapid increase in venue size for the group they’ve made sure the production matches, and indeed the backing visuals were gorgeous and very appropriate to the band. Playing from a set list split evenly between the the new album and The Bones of What You Believe, it was a case of giving the fans what they wanted, and hopefully introducing them to their new favourite song for when the band inevitably returns to a no doubt much larger venue again.
