Festival Music House 2012: Jason Collett, Grand Analog, & Young Empires

Night three of Festival Music House brought together Shawn Hook, Jason Collett, Grand Analog, Young Empires and Down with Webster; a range of different music styles. We arrived in time to see a bit of Collett’s set, which included songs from his new album Reckon, and he closed with the catchy “I’ll Bring the Sun”.

Next up was Grand Analog. Frontman Odario Williams, made his best attempts at bringing the energy up in the crowd with some on-stage antics that included laying on the stage. It seemed like Grand Analog was used to playing university frosh week gigs, so their amped up energy was a little lost on the crowd of industry insiders and party-hopping film festers.

Once Young Empires took the stage, it was clear who the crowd was there to see. Lead man Matthew Vlahovich brings a deep synth-pop sound to the group. Formerly of Golden Girls, a local fave, Vlahovich was able to get a few people dancing to their catchy tunes. Young Empires was the highlight of the night, with a tight, electro inspired set.

Next up was the frenetic Down with Webster. Bounding and leaping across the stage, these kids sound great, but it was getting late so we had to call it a night.

It was quite impressive to see all these great and varied musical talents across three nights of TIFF and we’ll admit we’re a little sad it’s over already. Thanks to all the musicians and rock-it gals, who again ‘rocked it’ yet again. We’re already counting down the days till to next year!

About The Author

At Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit there is a plaque that says, “If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be part of your revolution.” The quote is from Emma Goldman, an anarchist, feminist and free-thinker of the early 20th century. This quote sums a lot about how I feel about life. To me music and dancing are two of the best forms of stress relief and self-expression. My music tastes go from eclectic to electric, but my love is deep house with a side of disco and bass.
